Key Biscayne Magazine’s July/August 07 Home Issue. Today we’re more obsessed with our homes than ever before. TV programs show us what we can buy; how we can organize them, sell them, and more importantly, how we can transform our boring bedrooms into beautiful boudoirs. They give us the hope that if we live in the right environment everything else will change too. Maybe they’re right.

It’s surprising how my mind clears up as I get rid of clutter. Layers of my life unfold in front of me as I decide what should go and what can stay. The history of our lives is stored in the objects we surround ourselves with. I’m a sucker for nostalgia, yet it’s a relief when I am able to let go.

Our homes, like everything else, require pruning. Too much stuff around me makes me feel stagnant. I start to envy minimalists (and wonder where they store everything). Once in a while, I throw away some of the things weighing me down. A lamp that had stopped working sat in the corner of my bedroom for weeks before I finally got rid of it.

Success in life comes when we can feel good about not just about our appearance but about how we live. When my cleaning lady leaves my apartment, I feel I have a better grip on my life.

In this our home issue we enter the realm of design and speak with the mavericks of spaces. They combine practical knowledge with their sense of aesthetics to meet our daily needs, molding new spaces that fit both. With so many stunning homes and apartments on the island, it’s no wonder there’s high demand for interior designers and others who can make our environments more beautiful. As Oprah Winfrey has said, “The best investment in yourself is to beautify your surroundings.”

Getting rid of the old and making way for the new is liberating. As Feng Shui enthusiasts know, we can redirect energy with simple changes. We are not what we keep but what we are able to part with and perhaps recycle. A friend told me that he’s just started a new relationship and spent the weekend repainting his bed. How symbolic I thought. I realized there are many ways to make a fresh start. Some require just a new coat of paint.
