Thursday, September 21 at 6pm.- The Key Biscayne Community Foundation is holding the first meeting for a Non-Profit Volunteer Expo to take place in November.

The Key Biscayne Community Foundation is holding a Non Profit Volunteer Expo on November 17 2006 at 4pm on the Village Green during National Philanthropy Week. This event, completely funded by the KBCF, will offer Key Biscayners a unique chance to learn about the various volunteer opportunities for themselves and their families on Key Biscayne. We would like to offer your organization a gratis booth and the opportunity to participate on the Expo planning committee. In keeping with the mission of the Foundation, we are exploring ways in which the Foundation can encourage and support philanthropy in our community.

The volunteer Expo will be a venue for your organization to introduce the residents to opportunities within your organization. Each participating organization will be provided with a tent, table and chairs. The Foundation would like to educate our residents about some of the philanthropic opportunities available to them. As this is not a fund-raising event we are asking that groups refrain from soliciting attendees for funding on-site and rather focus their outreach efforts on providing information to those who are considering giving of their time and/or money as the Holiday Season approaches. We also remind you that the programs presented must be secular in nature and apolitical.

Our first meeting will be held at The Village Hall Community Room 120 at 88 West McIntyre on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at 6pm.

Sony Ericsson Open -- The NASDAQ-100 Open has always brought a certain buzz to the village of Key Biscayne.  During the 12 days of the tournament, tennis fans from all over the city can be found discussing the progression of the tournament, and trading stories about certain matches they were able to see live.  The tournament was founded by IMG in 1985, and has since grown into the largest non-Grand Slam event in tennis.  Since the tournament was founded, it has changed sponsors three times.  Now it is time for the tournament to meet yet another sponsor.

Miami’s beloved NASDAQ-100 Open will now be known as the Sony Ericsson Open, at least for the next four years.  On August 31, 2006, Sony Ericsson, a mobile phone company, signed a four-year contract to host the tournament under their name.  The Sony Ericsson Open will feature players from both the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour and the men’s ATP Tour.  Among these world-class tennis players there is Roger Federer, last year’s men’s champion, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, last year’s women’s champion.  Both will be looking to defend their titles when the tournament commences in the spring.

The very first Sony Ericsson Open, which will be held at Crandon Park, begins on March 21 and runs through April 1.  Sony Ericsson has big plans for this tournament, which include a new logo, and a pre-tournament VIP party in Miami, to name a few.  Even now, before the tournament has come into clear view, it shows a lot of promise.  The tournament should be a great time for viewers of all ages, we hope to see you there.

Michael Shanley of BoatNation USA Receives Certified Marina Manager StatusAfter more than 20 years of hands-on industry experience in boat manufacturing and sales, yacht management, and marina operations, Key Biscayne resident Michael Shanley has received the Certified Marina Manager designation.  This is a very prestigious title which is given to only 188 marina managers worldwide.  We congratulate Mr. Shanley on becoming a part of this elite group.

From October 22-26, 50 professional sailing teams from 10 countries will be competing in the 2006 Snipe Western Hemisphere and Orient Championships, which will be hosted at the Coconut Grove sailing club. A difficulty that many of these international sailors face is temporary housing during the tournament. Housing is very costly for these athletes, and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone living in Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, South Miami, or Key Biscayne who have a spare room from October 21-27 could assist in housing them. At the moment, housing is still in need for:
- 2 sailors from Argentina - 4 sailors from the Bahamas
- 2 sailors from Japan - 4 sailors from the USA
- 2 sailors from Brazil

If you will be able to host the team during the week, please send a message to western_housing@bellsouth.net
