Pick up your January edition of the Key Biscayne Magazine! It usually starts with the need to belong. That’s how it was for me. I needed a roof over my head to call my very own. Having the soul of a gypsy and being born and raised in different continents, home has always been an ephemeral word to me. Home was like life: transient. Only plants have roots, I thought, but then that need for security started whispering “stability” and “investment” in my ear.

Buying my first home was my first experience of belonging somewhere. Real estate is such a methodical term. We think of it in terms of gain, worth and deals, but for me it was a way to create order out of chaos. The root of real estate is security either from investment or from having some place (or several places) to call your own. It’s about owning, cherishing and carving out your own destiny—deciding where you want to call home and calling it just that. It’s not about opening an atlas of the world and picking out a destination to live with your eyes closed. It is a conscious decision to choose where and how you want to live.

For this, our real estate issue, I got a chance to speak with one of the moguls of real estate, developer Jorge Perez, and ask what he calls home. Every time I look out onto Biscayne Bay and see the glittering city lights reflected onto the water my nomadic voices are silenced and I think I have found my home.
