Thursday, November 17 7pm: The Village of Key Biscayne invites you to an Art in Public Places Seminar with César Trasobares. Trasobares, an artist and art advisor to the Village, will recount the history of the Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places Program and will recall incidents and challenges in working with artists, the communities, and County Departments. Questions from the audience will follow the presentation. Trasobares defines cultural practice broadly: in the studio, he produces a vast body of work in multiple media; in the “cultural field” he serves as art activist, curator, educator, and public art advisor. As Executive Director of Metro-Dade’s Art in Public Places Program (1985-1990), Trasobares managed the implementation of the %-for-art ordinance overseeing important site-specific artworks for government buildings and community centers. To learn more about César Trasobares and the Art in Pubic Places in Miami-Dade Program, please join us at the Community Center Auditorium at 7pm. The Key Biscayne Community Center |

It’s my favorite time of year, not only because of the change of season but because it’s when we make our shopping lists for the season of giving. For me, it often goes like this: one gift for you and one gift for me. With so much temptation, it’s hard to resist. Since everyone has wish lists, do we succumb and effortlessly purchase a hassle-free gift that we know the receiver will lovelosing the element of surpriseor do we dare to venture out to find the unique gift that we believe is just right? In this issue, we highlight various shopping destinations in Key Biscayne and beyond and offer some gift ideas that are sure to please even the pickiest of people. Wish lists (which have become de rigueur) make the process of gift buy less agonizing, as a self-proclaimed shop-a-phile, I believe they also take the joy out of it. For me, shopping is not about walking into a store and just picking out the first suitable item. It’s more like a love affair. It’s a process that requires passion and attention and it can be frustrating. But then there’s that moment when you stumble across a rare find with an adrenaline rush that’s exhilarating. It works a little like the power of attraction: once you see it, you know you want it! Sabrina Azadi, Editor-in-Chief, Key Biscayne Magazine, editor@keybiscaynemag.com (305) 903-6445 |

Our hats off to the Pankey Institute! Students from all over North America were attending the Pankey Institute when Hurricane Wilma struck. For those of you that do not where the Pankey Institute is located, it is the beautiful last building on the right when leaving the Key. They train dentists throughout the world on cutting edge dental technology and running a good dental practice. The students were picked up in the morning before the hurricane struck, the building was shuttered up, and classes began as usual. After the Hurricane, the shutters were opened to reveal the devastation Wilma left to the surprise of those students who hunkered down studying and learning during the storm. We've heard of Broadway having the motto "the show must go on", and now we can apply that motto to the Pankey Institute! We are proud that one of our local businesses didn't let a Hurricane keep them from keeping on. Congratulations to Chris Sager and his staff. ************************************************** Thursday, November 10: Deadline to advertise in The Islander News’ special advertising supplement "Banking and Finance from A to Z."
