April 19th – May 17th Every Tuesday from 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Appreciation of Jazz.  The Institute for retired professionals of the University of Miami has arrived at the Key Biscayne Community Center.  This course will be taught by Joe Donato and offers an entertaining overview of the hundred-year old history of Jazz, the first indigenous musical art form.  From its historical roots in Southern blues and gospel to modern day Jazz, students will gain a keen understanding of this exciting and important musical influence. The course will be held in the Multi-purpose room and the fee is $80 for members and $100 for non-members.

Approximately 200 businesses throughout the County come to this Expo to set up shop and display their wares and services. Expo participants are always from a wide variety of businesses. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center unveiled the beautiful bronze sculpture of Marjory Stoneman Douglas created by sculptor Freda Tschumy on Saturday, April 9th. Marjory’s likeness was lovingly coaxed from photographs studied by the talented sculptor.  This life-size sculpture of dear Marjory brings to reality a vision inspired by the late Hazel Neale Kononoff.  The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center will be the permanent home for this dynamic sculpture.

MAST Academy is proud to announce the PTSA Fishing Tournament Winners!  The 30 anglers and 14 boats that braved heavy wind and rain to participate in the MAST Academy PTSA’s second annual Fishing Tournament hauled in 112 fish on Saturday, April 2nd. Trophies for heaviest fish went to David Pearl for a 20-pound kingfish, Carlos Garcia for a half-pound mangrove snapper (inshore category) and Brian Garcia for a 9.5-pound snook. The winning team was Marine 5 (Carlos, Gabriela and Daniel Garcia, Patricia Jimenez and Adam Schertz). Robert McBride took the top prize for MAST staff, Carlos Garcia for adults, Abie Raymond for students and Jason Schmidt for youth. The MAST Class of 2006 won the class trophy and bragging rights for the year. The Big Fish Story trophy went to Dan Casale for his tale of a broken-down boat in the Keys backcountry
