Consumer alert: Fat finger dialing. Careless dialing can cost you money when placing collect or other operator-assisted calls, warns the Federal Trade Commission. It's called ''fat-finger dialing'' and it works like this: You place a collect call from a public phone or pay phone, intending to use a service like 1-800-CALL-ATT or 1-800-COLLECT. But you hit the wrong button and end up with something like 1-800-CALL-LAT. You get connected to the party you wished to call, but the phone company that connects you isn't the one you thought you were using. Instead, it's a company that secured 800 numbers similar to well-known ones and it's banking on the possibility that you and others will accidentally misdial. If it happens, you won't even know you're using a different phone carrier because you won't know you misdialed and the company won't tell you or the person you're calling. But the charge for the misdialed call is two to three times higher than it would have been had you reached the intended carrier.
So be sure to dial carefully.
